2024 Run – Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund

On April 28, 2024 we celebrated Julia’s life for the 25th year. For many of us it was an annual reunion, for others -- a discovery. Edgewood park was filled with runners, their families and friends, people of all ages. LEAP’s staff and counselors were everywhere, working together with Marty Schaivone, our chief organizer. Eliana efficiently coordinated LEAP’s volunteers and foods procurement. Melissa was in charge of publicity. Mimi conducted the warmup for kids participating in the Fun Run. Our dear friends and family: Elyse, Eugene, Genya, Judith, Lucyna, Rose and Victor helped with registration, distribution of T-shirts. Victor and Melissa were busy taking photos. Andre from Mighty Vibe joined us as a DJ, donating his time, expertise, and enthusiasm. Snacks were donated by Jonathan Edwards College, Yale University and many local businesses in response to LEAP’s solicitations. The main race, timed by Steve Reeds from The Last Mile Racing, was completed by 91 runners. The 5k course record was shuttered by Gilmar Barrios, crossing the finish line in 16 min 32 sec and maintaining an amazing pace of 5:20/mile. Julia’s sister Vivian read a moving excerpt of Julia’s writing (see below). Julia’s family helped with the awards ceremony. The proceeds to LEAP from JRMF were over $20,000.

... I lie in bed once again entrapped in the center of a tornado of thoughts. Outside, the rain begins to fall and shiny drops congregate on the branches of the tree outside my window. I watch one silver drop of rain linger at the bottom of a branch, clinging to it with a quiet passion, and then falling with such a hesitance that I can almost hear it sigh.

I put my hands behind my head and look up towards the ceiling. I am like the raindrop; I cannot turn back; I can never walk towards the little girl. Here I lie, thrust into a society where the push is constantly forward, forward while I long to turn my head. The sound of the rain outside is soothing and for a moment I believe that all of it, even the sad drop which I watched fall to the ground, all of it is magic.

I cannot convince or be convinced that this world is not bleak or grey. We will never be fed. Our questions will not be answered. Nobody shall ever touch infinity. Nobody will learn how to fly. I will, however, spread my wings - and if you are waiting to catch me, knowing that I shall fall, this too, is magic.
