The 25th Julia’s Run for Children

Sunday April 28, 2024 in Edgewood Park, New Haven, CT

Description
The run celebrates the life of Julia Rusinek and honors the ideals for which she lived. She dedicated her summers and her free time to working with children. Run proceeds will go to our charity partner LEAP (Leadership, Education, Athletics in Partnership). LEAP is an academic, social enrichment, and leadership training program for children and youth from high-poverty neighborhoods in New Haven, CT. LEAP is perfectly aligned with our and Julia's mission to support children through developing leadership skills, a love of literature and writing, and dedication to athleticism.

The run will take place in the scenic Edgewood Park, in the Westville section of New Haven. Edgewood Park was designed in 1910 by Frederick Law Olmstead who also designed the Central Park in NYC. Our 5k course stays entirely within the park, on its primary road running by West River and the ponds. The route is safe, quiet, scenic, and there are NO cars.

Directions

The run takes place in the Edgewood Park, just off Whalley Ave in the Westville section of New Haven. The route starts and ends near the pavilion / skate park. For driving directions use:

  • ‘Manjares New Haven’ (a great coffee shop/restaurant)
  • '382 W Rock Ave New Haven'
  • 'Edgewood Park Skate Park' will also get you there.

DO NOT use just 'Edgewood Park' as it may direct you to Edgewood Ave, about 1 mile from the start line.

Parking

There is some parking within the Edgewood Park and a great deal of street parking. But on Sunday the park and area businesses are open, so parking may be tight. If you arrive early, try the public in-the-park lot which holds about 60 cars. Otherwise try parking on

  • West Rock Ave, or
  • Fitch St, 1/4 mile north. There is a large parking lot open to the public.

Run course

The course travels out from the pavilion on the park road for 1/2 mile. It returns to the start area point and then goes back out for one full mile. At the turn around it returns to finish to cover the 3.11 mi distance.

Neighnorhood

Edgewood Park is a wonderful public venue with tennis, basketball, a dog park, and a skate park. There are some terrific caffees a short walk away:

  • Manjares, a great coffee shop/restaurant
  • Bellas Cafe on Whalley Ave
  • Cat Cafe, and
  • Pistachios.
